Unblinking Eyes, Awaiting

Unblinking Eyes, Awaiting, is a composite of high-resolution photographs of the north-end wall of Cook County Jail printed at 1:1 scale. Originally represented on a 40' x 26' wall at the 2019 Chicago Architecture Biennial, this latest iteration further fragments a portion of the jail. Installed beginning at the floor and rising up the wall represent the 1:1 scale and relative positions of the portions of the jail wall they reproduce. Unblinking Eyes, Awaiting highlights the impact of the carceral institution as a shared backdrop to the daily lives of those living on both sides of its walls. By making the politics of location visible, Gaspar poses questions about how the language of detention, surveillance, and policing marks our contemporary urban experience.
