I Look For These Past Hands

In I Look for These Past Hands, a raised flag depicts an image of clasped marble hands found after the Great Chicago Fire (courtesy of the Chicago History Museum). The gesture references the survival of the city, while its installation site (West Side, Chicago) is a memorial to the Chicago uprisings after the murder of Martin Luther King Jr. Here, Gaspar explores what is remembered and what is forgotten, and how communities embody the power to re-define memory and history. Originally installed at β€œThe Franklin,” an artist-run gallery in Chicago.
