(an 8-week project with youth from the Lawndale communities of Chicago exploring temporary and site-specific art that engages the local community landscape)
Lead Artist: Maria Gaspar
Assistant Artist: Emily Grelck
Residency Artists: Sebastian Alvarez, Carla Duarte, Benjamin Thorp
The City As Site (2010) project was a series of temporary public art projects in the Little Village and North Lawndale neighborhoods of Chicago’s West Side with young people, ages 14-21, and residents of these respective neighborhoods. Using interdisciplinary arts practices, we created transitory, experiential and performative projects that initiated dialogue between the physical geographies and psycho-geographies of these neighboring Lawndale communities. Youth and Artist Instructors created and maintained a blog site documenting our collaborative processes.
