Anything But Silent

A text-based performance based on the official description of the architecture of Cook County Jail in Chicago. The text was mined from the Cook County Department of Corrections website, printed, cut up, then reconfigured to flip the language of confinement into a language of freedom.

This work was originally presented as part of The Quarantine Concerts through the Experimental Sound Studio (ESS) to benefit The Chicago Freedom School, an organization rooted in a long legacy of liberatory education and that provides training and education for young people and adult allies to create a just world. Original presentation here: twitch.tv/videos/657463447. The Quarantine Concerts are a collaborative endeavor meant to provide artists a space to share their work and continue to earn a living during this time when most live performance opportunities have been cancelled due to COVID-19. We believe in the necessity of art during difficult moments like these, and feel fortunate to live in a time when loss of mobility does not have to mean loss of community.
